Federer, Hewitt Make 2005 Debuts Monday; Hingis, Philippoussis Back on Dating Circuit <IMG hspace=5 src="http://www.tennis-x.com/images/players/federer-houston.jpg" align=left vspace=5 border=2>Federer Begins 2005 Campaign at ATP Doha World No. 1 Roger Federer begins his 2005 campaign this week at the Qatar Exxon Mobil Open in Doha, filling his pockets with some well-deserved appearance money after a sterling 2004 season that included wins at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Aside from enjoying the oil-rich hospitality in Qatar, the Swiss sees Doha as an opportunity to pad his large rankings lead over contenders/pretenders Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt. "If I perform well at the start of the new season, I will keep my top ranking," Federer said, "something that is very important to me now." Federer enters Doha with a 17-match winning streak from 2004, and a 23-0 streak against Top 10 players stretching all the way back to 2003. To come away with his first Doha title Federer will have to navigate a field laden with seeded obstacles and some unseeded spoilers. Joining the Swiss among the seeded are 2004 Masters Cup qualifier and French Open champion Gaston Gaudio, the back-from-injury Sebastien Grosjean, Russian Mikhail Youzhny, veteran Andrei Pavel, Croatian Ivan Ljubicic, Spanish lefty Feliciano "F-Lo" Lopez, and Russian Nikolay Davydenko. Among the unseeded threats are a possible second-round match-up for Federer with Greg Rusedski, Rafael "The Prodigy" Nadal, former slam champions Al Costa and Thomas Johansson, and the former junior phenom Gael Monfils of France. Have seen a bit of Hewitt over the last couple of day's on the practice court , He is BUFFED! (or bigger than he was). Be prepared for a different package this year as he :

1] tries to regain #2 ranking before the AO starts , apparently has to finish in the semi's of Adelaide to achieve this.

2] tries to put an end to the Federer show , alliances aside I think he can do it.

C'mon Hewitt , dig in , hold ground and give these Federer blow horns something to think about! Nah seriously I just think it would be great if there were a few more contenders to raise the GS trophies.

"ccm" couldnt agree more , those donations are piss weak to the max(does that make sense?) and the fact that Sharapova's misely $10000 handout made world headlines is a disgrace. Why she or her management company would want the world to know that I do not know.

And yeah I will be at the Tournament on the weekend , have opted to watch Hopman cup live during the week. As I type Molik is about 5 minutes from taking on Hantachova. Molik should beat Hantachova but she should have beaten her at the US open aswell. Will be very interesting to see how the Poo goes against Hrbaty.

BTW Adelaide is very overcast today , 33 degrees C , humid , very little breeze , periodic thunder and rain forecast for the afternoon.

Agree w/ you and gsm -- I am entirely disappointed by the response. Rafter (at first anonymously) donated about $350 000 to a hospital after his 1st US Open win, and that was just during 'normal' times, not during a massive crisis. I think EVERYONE can do better, tennis pros/organizations included..... but this is going to take months and years to address properly... I hope we'll all have many opportunities to help out.

Hewitt is buff? Could be gearing up for a war of attrition with Roger, might be an effective strategy in best-3-of-5 matches, assuming one of the first two sets can be won (and certainly not lost 6-love!)

Yup - go here and type his name as your seach term. Some pics of a recent practise session. He's definitely pumped up (though Serena could still probably do a lap around the court with him over her shoulder).

Lleyton's going to be really disappointed if he thinks that he can get the number two ranking by winning Adelaide. Unless Tennis Australia seed by surface or some system that doesn't use the rankings directly (which they don't normally do), or Federer or Roddick withdraw, he's going to be third. What he achieves in Adelaide is not going to be enough to get second.

Currently, Roddick has 3655 points and Hewitt 3590 (65 difference). Neither can lose any this week, and Roddick's not playing so cannot gain. If Hewitt wins Adelaide, he'll gain 175, but has to drop his fifth optional of 110. So this makes them equal on 3655 points. Unfortunately for Hewitt, the first tie-break that the ATP uses is points in required events, and Roddick has rather more than he has. Someone tell Lleyton, please?

Not possible, unfortunately: semis would only give him 75 points, and that's not even enough to get counted in his best 5 optionals since his worst result is 110 already. If he's runner-up he'll gain 10 points (120-110), and if he wins he'll get 65 (175-110), and be equal with Roddick. But Roddick will stay second because his overall record at required events is better.

'pepper' maybe someone already has , I was watching the local news and I was able to quote Hewitt : "If I gotta win on cow sh*t then I guess thats what I have to do". He was refering to the surface of the AO again during a press conference after his doubles , they lost.

Ive heard kafelnikov (coincedently against Hewitt in Davis Cup , Yevgeny claimed he was going to "give Hewitt a tennis lesson" and was in turn given one himself) refer to a court as a potatoe patch , but "cow sh*t" , never. If this doesnt make headlines then I have no idea.

And yes that is a mystery 'pepper' as it is being treated as gospel over here that if he makes the semis in Adelaide he will be ranked #2 in time for AO.

Going to the Adelaide tournament on the weekend , will give you guys a little report

Yea, kinda disappointing that X didn't do the rankings research just like the Oz press. According to Bob Larson, Lleyton can't catch Andy, and the Aussie press finally recanted, when the ATP informed them of the rule.

And considering how much tennis-x hates Roddick, you'd think they could credit him with having the guts to realize something was wrong and sack Gilbert. Though, sucks for the rest of us since we'll be stuck hearing him yap on ESPN during AO :roll:

well, he did go sleeveless a la nadal in his first match at adelaide (the doubles with his coach). . .though it didn't help them win. got some flash blue shoes as well.

reports say he looked good (his play that is) at times, but rusty in patches. though the rust might be partially due to the doubles, which he hasn't done much of for ages.
