Austrailian Open 2011 Contest: Rafa Slam?

Postby Forehand_lob on Wed Jan 12, 2011 10:20 am

THE RULES

1. Pick quarterfinalists, semifinalists, finalists, and champions for both ATP and WTA draws. You will receive 7.5 points for each correct quarterfinalist, 5 points for each correct semifinalist and finalist, and 20 points for each correct champion. (Rafa's Rule is in effect as he's won 3 slams in a row; picking him as champ will only get you 10 points if he wins).

2. SUBSTITUTE PICK: Pick a player from each draw to replace one of your quarterfinalists. If this player makes the quarters, they will take the place of whomever you picked in that section of the draw

3. BIGGEST LOSER: pick the highest seed that will lose in the earliest round from each draw. The player must be a top-16 seed. You get 5 points if your seed is the highest to lose and 2 points if your seed falls in the same round as the highest seed to lose.

4. WINNING UGLY: Pick a player in each draw. If that player was the quarterfinalist who lost the most games en route to the QFs (i.e. within rounds 1-4), you get 5 points. If that player did not lose the most games but lost more games than anyone picked, you get 2 points.

BONUS PICKS

1. DOUBLES ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE GAME: Pick the winner of the men's, women's, and mixed doubles events (the draws for these are usually posted later, so you may amend your original post to include these). A correct pick will get you 5 bonus points for the men's and women's pick and 3 bonus points for the mixed. Picking the non-winning finals team will get you 2 points for the men's and women's and 1 point for the mixed.

EXTRAS

*** Each bagel set your quarterfinalists bake is worth 2 points. Each breadstick is worth 1 point. This counts your substitute pick, too.

***Unseeded quarterfinalists are worth an extra half point for every seed they take out en route.

***WTF bonus: if you have a pick that makes it to the quarterfinals that no one else made (not even as a substitute pick), you'll gain an extra 5 points for it.

DEADLINE

It should be before play starts, but I'm flexible so long as not that much of the tournament has already happened. When in doubt, post your picks (this means you, lou)!

Nearly forgot, haven't followed any of the warm-ups. I am listening now to the ESPN team debate the tournament faves, so I know who not to pick.

(Incidentally, Rodge looks like he's been hitting the Clairol over the break.)

Rafa d Hewitt (No, I'm not really serious, but it's about his last chance for an "lucky old dog" run, so why not?)
Soderling (Tsonga) d Murray
Djokovic d Gasquet
de Bakker d Federer

Rafa d Rob
Djoka d de Bakker

Rafa d Djoka

BL Ferrer
WU Murray

Henin (Kuzy) d Woz

Stosur d Kirilenko

Henin d Venus
Stosur d Clijsters

Stosur d Henin

BL Zvonareva
WU Stosur

Did I really pick Stosur to win? Hmm, just hoping the Aussies get a nice storyline.

Geez, usually when your upset pick is up two sets and 5-2 in the third against a guy who's never come back from a two-set deficit, you feel pretty good about your chances.

But it wasn't to be for Louise. My guy Monfils (OK, my former least favorite player) came back and won when DeBakker turned in one of the biggest choke jobs ever, getting broken for 5-4, then not moving for three consecutive Monfils aces that all were in reach, then going away, then getting hurt. This is the first time I've ever expected Monfils to play well in a Slam, so it would have served me right if he had gone down meekly.

And, by the way, if you're choking, Monfils is one of the last players you want to see on the other side of the net because he makes you play three extra winners on every point.

All in all, it's been a very entertaining first day. The borring Querrey goes out in five to Kubot, who was crushing his first-serve return. Fish, who I've come around on completely in the last year, played a terrific fifth set vs. Hanescu to improve to 1-18 in his career after dropping the first two sets. Federer's fun house was back in full display. They showed only bits and pieces of the Roddick bore-fest. That's what I like to see (and not see).

At least she isn't wearing the nude-colored underwear this time (although Venus thought about wearing it, per her post-match interview...)

I'm surprised that Davydenko is out. After beating Rafa in straight sets two weeks ago, I thought he was back to his old form where he just quietly sneaks in to the QF/SF of Grand Slams.

Ivanovic just lost to Makarova 10-8 in the third. the last part of the 3rd set was actually very, very good, both women were going for it and hitting gutsy winners (especially Ivanovic during Makarova's first 5 match points.)

Kim beat Dinara 6-0, 6-0 in about 40 minutes. Ouch.

15th straight Aus Open for Lleyton Hewitt. Go lil bastard! Too bad for him that Nalby seems to be shaking off his carb coma and is starting to liven up.

Tsonga, Baggy, Gasquet, Nalby - we need a special term for extremely talented underachievers who just won't go to the gym. Is it lack of ambition? Ego? Softness? If they seemed happy enough with their fortunes, it would make perfect sense to me, but Nalby & Gasquet in particular seem cranky. Hmm.

Doubles draws are up except for mixed.

Is Venus actually wearing any pants in that pic?

I always thought Nalby was cranky because he thought of himself as the next big thing in Argentinian tennis (after Vilas) only Gaudio and del Potro won slams instead of him. As for Gasquet, I think he's probably convinced that the French tennis magazine cover ruined his life.

dubs, i'll pick the bryans and the beauties, i.e., gisela and flavia.

yeah, who'da thunk it about monfils, funches? i was counting my points and gumby goes and wins it in 5.

wawrinka dmitrov could be good today. i am actually in australia right now and was, unfortunately, subjected to courier's commentary on the hewitt/nalby match. i don't have a night ticket until tomorrow. saw the first set of date v radwanska, sat next to date's coach, et al. i kept wanting to ask him if she could get in trouble for him coaching when no one knew what he was saying, but thought the better of it ...
