My take on Roddick's game has more to do with court sense. For whatever reason - could be because of the two monster strokes he relies on to win most of his points - Andy doesn't seem to always know how to come in and close out a point. I think the technical side of volleying and "learning it early" are a bit over rated. Wilander picked it up enough later in his career. But he always looked more comfortable than Andy does transitioning to net, taking balls early, moving in and punching out a floater. It always looks like a conscious decision for Andy, rather than something he feels in the course of a point. I'm a big fan of thinking, but when it comes to athletics, the less you're consciously thinking while moving around, the better.

Andy sure does close out a lot of points with the serve and forehand, though. Will he learn the all court game? Dunno. Not holding my breath at this point.

But Conrad is right in terms of the big picture. What I wouldn't give to have an ugly game like A-Rod, travel the world, win some big tournaments, lose some others, never have to worry about money for the rest of my life...oh, the trauma of being #4.

... Just a thought

Yes, I am saying that is pretty good. He is number Four in the world. That means, there are only three guys in the world whom he can't beat AT THIS MOMENT. I would say that is pretty good.

Just a statement.

i'm with you conrad. everyone talks about andy as if he's nothing but a serve. i think andy is more talented than what he is given credit for. how many guys on the pro tour can say that they are in the top 5, and he's been for 3 or 4 years, and he's only 23. let's remember andy can still improve his backhand, volleys, and get more fit.

I was just telling a hitting partner of mine something about this. I played junior tourneys in the 14 and unders with Sampras and at the time (he was 11 or 12 I think and ranked #3 or #4 - tells you how good he was - I couldn't even get a friggin ranking!) he played exactly like Michael Chang, who was the #1 in the 12 year old group. Sampras was glued to the baseline, two handed backhand, short, ran down a lot of balls. I mean, he was the white Michael Chang!

A few years later everything had changed. Needless to say now, a smart move by his coach at the time...guess he saw something there.

your numbers are a little off. he won't be 23 until august and he didn't break into the top 5 until 2003. just sayin.

i don't think anyone's saying he's a talentless hack, just that his game ain't a technical dream.

anyway - i second what consafos says - even if he never improves a bit, why should he care? he still got dealt a pretty good hand in life.

Hey, I thought you would rather be at the top of the game instead of settling for #4 or #5 in the world. Isn't it why you play week in and week out is to get the best results and to be at the top?

Out of curiosity, how many people who post on this board are number one in their professions?

Exactly! When Mariah Carey drops an album what would she rather have #1 on Billboard or just coming in at #4?

It's about being the best...I think any tennis player, athlete or performer wants to be the best, especially if there are records to be broken and money to be made.

lol; sorry, not true! exceedingly proud...but my profession doesn't have a ranking system. I'm always trying to be the best. Whether I am or not, years of work and preparation means I'm ready for just about anything... important in my line of work.

as far as tennis goes, we all know Andy Roddick should be proud of being #3 or #4, but at the same time we must recognize, as he does, that #1 is a past tense for him. Ditto for many players on the WTA Tour scrambling to get that top spot back. It's not easy. Those who best prepare are those most likely to take it again. Those who do not prepare, simply wishing for success, will not easily (or likely) achieve the greatness they seek.

Well of course Andy WANTS to be No. 1 in the world. who doesn't? but the fact is, 3 guys are better than him. If you're gonna say that Andy sucks because hes no. 4 instead of no. 1, then we should just hate everyone except for federer.
